Jewish Genetic Diseases Center of Greater Phoenix

“Legacy Gene Pool”

Jewish Genetic Diseases Center of Greater Phoenix Mission Statement:

The mission of the Center is to provide awareness, knowledge, and screening to empower the Jewish Community to make informed decisions regarding genetic diseases.

Case Statement:

Why Genetic Testing for Young Jewish Adults?

As Jews have children, they pass on the traditions of their parents and grandparents. But there’s something else that may be passed on – the possibility that they may be carriers for one of many Jewish genetic diseases. Without testing, a lack of information can lead to tragic results as a child may    be born with a devastating disease such as Tay-Sachs disease or Canavan disease. With testing in advance of contemplated parenthood, Jewish adults can become informed about their risks and make educated decisions.

Our Center is also committed to educating our Jewish community regarding hereditary breast and ovarian cancers due to BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations. We provide education and referral services to create awareness of these mutations. Educating carriers of the options available to them could be life saving.

The Center keeps pace with medical advances in order to provide families with the knowledge they need to avoid the heartbreak of a preventable Jewish genetic disease.

At least a third of Ashkenazi Jewish individuals are    estimated to be carriers for one or more recessive Jewish genetic diseases. If both parents are carriers for the same disease, there is a twenty five percent chance with each pregnancy that the child will be afflicted with the disease.

While we have already tested twelve hundred young Jewish adults, our goal is to screen all young Jewish adults in the Greater Phoenix area.

Our Legacy Gene Pool is a community of dedicated and committed individuals who want to guarantee that our organization continues to provide its programs and services for many years to come. By establishing a legacy through a bequest or planned gift, they have planted the seed for future generations, doing their part to make sure that the Jewish Genetic Diseases Center of Greater Phoenix remains strong and vibrant. With their support Educational & Screening Events provide Jewish adults with knowledge of their risks and options regarding hereditary diseases.

Thank you for supporting our vision of a Jewish Community free of genetic disease
